Discover the California Riviera (off property)

Registered guests of conference attendees are invited to “Discover the California Riviera” on
Tuesday, October 9
from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Guests will embark on a unique historic walking tour of picturesque downtown San Juan Capistrano and take a fascinating look at the Mission San Juan Capistrano and the Los Rios District, the oldest neighborhood in California.
The tour begins at The Mission San Juan Capistrano known as the ‘Jewel of the Missions.’  Built by Father Serra in 1776, it is famous for the annual return of the swallows. Seventh in the chain of California missions, it stands today as a thriving historical, cultural and educational center.  With its lush gardens, cool fountains and interesting museum exhibits, guests find the mission both peaceful and beautiful.

After a docent guided tour of the Mission, guests will head to the historic El Adobe de Capistrano Restaurant.  The restaurant site has been recognized as a California State Historical Landmark, situated just two short blocks south of the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano and the Train Depot.  The building was originally two separate structures, The northern section was originally the home of Miguel Yorba Adobe, built in 1797.  The southern half housed the Juzgado (court and jails) and was established in 1812. Today, the architectural elements of El Adobe de Capistrano artfully reflect the history of both the building and location. Antiques, furnishing and décor were all chosen to compliment the genuine Mexican-Californian ambiance.

After lunch it’s on to the Los Rios District which lies directly across the railroad tracks from the Capistrano Depot and is the oldest neighborhood in California.  The forty homes that remain here include three original adobe structures.  The Montanez, the Rios and the Silvas are all that remain of the adobes that housed the builders of the mission and the mission ranch workers in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Guests will enjoy a docent guided walking tour and antique shopping in this wonderful historic neighborhood.
